IMPACT: SOVIET RUSSIA WAS NOT KIND TO SERGEY BRIN’S JEWISH PARENTS, who made the difficult decision to immigrate to the U.S. when Brin was 6 years old. After receiving a master’s in computer science from Stanford University, Brin went on to cofound Google with classmate Larry Page and became recognizable as a proponent of Google Glass. Brin presides over Alphabet, the parent conglomerate of the Google empire, and directs X, an incubator company for product concepts in the early stages of development. When Brin discovered that he possesses the mutated gene that indicates Parkinson’s, he set out to beat the odds for himself and others. Today, the new Alphabet life sciences company Verily will target solutions for managing and curing the disease, as well as cancer, diabetes and heart problems.
