In advance of Techonomy 2018, we asked our speakers three crucial questions that frame our upcoming flagship event. Request your invite to join us this November in Half Moon Bay, CA.

Q: How big of a responsibility does business have to make the world more equitable?

I think business is responsible for job creation, enabling entrepreneurship and providing equal opportunity for all. Knowing that there isn’t a level playing field, we should do everything in our power to ensure equal access and a chance to those who are willing to work hard and take risks. We aren’t a non-profit, though.

Q: What emerging technology can have the greatest positive impact on society?

Big data (thanks to IoT, etc.) and AI (which will enable us to make sense of all the big data) are the technologies that will have the biggest impact. Voice commands will also be big, as it’s much easier to talk than type. Self-driving cars will also have a massive positive impact; think of all the lives that will be saved. It’s important for us to remember that technology on its own is neither good nor bad — how it’s used is important and what makes all the difference.  Tech needs to step up more on directing this.

Q: What is the biggest issue that you worry is not getting enough attention?

I’m concerned about the loss of jobs due to automation. Overall, I think we need to be focused on the ethical use of technology.
