The significance of international companies having a demonstrated environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy and communicating its related milestones and achievements is becoming increasingly apparent across all industries, and the gaming industry is no exception.

IGT is a global leader in gaming, delivering entertaining and responsible gaming experiences within the highly regulated areas of lottery, casino gaming, digital gaming and sports betting. For more than 15 years, IGT has demonstrated our industry leadership in sustainability excellence and continues to incorporate ESG best practices within our daily business activities.

Our efforts have been recognized by important ESG rating agencies such as CDP, Sustainalytics, ISS-ESG, MSCI and Ecovadis, among others. We strive to instill a sustainability mindset throughout our business and ensure that our employees make sustainable practices a priority in our daily operations.

IGT’s sustainability strategies are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and we proactively support nine of the UN’s 17 SDGs. Additionally, IGT’s sustainability initiatives are overseen by our board of directors’ Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee to guarantee that the utmost significance is given to ESG matters that may impact IGT and the communities where we operate.

Earlier this year, we introduced IGT Sustainable Play™. This initiative represents our company’s commitment to leading the gaming industry in global sustainability by celebrating our dedication to our people and planet. Sustainable Play is broken into four key pillars, or priorities that are driving our sustainability efforts: valuing and protecting our people, advancing responsibility, supporting our communities and fostering sustainable operations.

Valuing and Protecting Our People

Built on the foundation of providing equal opportunities for all employees, valuing and protecting our people is about fostering a safe, healthy and inclusive workplace. IGT recently added “Equity” to the official name of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) organization, ensuring a focus remains on providing all employees with the tools they need to be successful.

IGT’s DEI efforts are present at every level of the company. We have seven active diversity and inclusion groups structured around underrepresented dimensions of diversity, including women, people of African descent, millennials and Generation Z employees, people over 50, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community and military veterans.

Our DEI accomplishments have been recognized externally as well. IGT earned top-ranking honors in the 2022 All-In Diversity Project’s report for DEI in the gaming industry. The All-Index serves as a benchmark for DEI within the gaming industry and ranked us within the top-three gaming suppliers.

We’ve received additional honors from some globally renowned organizations, including a top score in the 2023 Disability Equality Index and being named a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.” In 2022, IGT also received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Corporate Equality Index and was named a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality.”

Advancing Responsibility

Responsible gaming will always be embedded into IGT’s DNA. The gaming industry is highly regulated, and we are mindful of the risks and social stigmas associated with gaming. IGT adheres to all regulatory compliance and jurisdictional laws where we operate, and above all, we provide the highest-level player protections with advanced responsible gaming tools and processes.

We partner with the industry’s leading responsible gaming associations and maintain responsible gaming accreditation across all four of our product segments. Our Positive Play approach creates a culture that reflects our core values and encourages all players to engage in positive play behaviors.

Additionally, our products, games, systems and web portals include sophisticated responsible gaming tools to safeguard players and address the needs of regulators. These components include age-verification technology, self-exclusion features, spending and time limits, anti-money laundering processes, as well as problem gambling support information.

Supporting Our Communities

IGT operates in more than 100 jurisdictions and prioritizes giving back to the communities where our employees live and work. IGT has Community Ambassadors in our offices around the globe who partner with local nonprofits to schedule community events and volunteer opportunities.

A few years ago, we established Global Giving Week, in which we provided our employees an extra eight hours of paid time off to volunteer with nonprofits of their choice. This initiative was so successful that we expanded the program from one week to the entire month of May. We encourage our employees to volunteer as teams and share their experiences through our internal communication channels.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see the scope of volunteer projects our people coordinate – from beach cleanups and building houses to competing in friendly soccer matches for charity, our employees identified creative avenues to fully embrace the spirit of Global Giving Month.

Fostering Sustainable Operations

Managing environmental impacts is a large part of IGT’s strategy to building a more sustainable future. We joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in late 2021, and recently received validation from SBTi for our near- and long-term targets, as well as our net-zero emissions reduction targets. This is a milestone achievement as it demonstrates that we’re committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

To contribute to these emission reduction goals, we purchased Guarantees of Origin to certify that 100% of the electricity consumed at IGT’s Italian lottery offices comes renewable sources. We’re also evaluating ways to leverage technology to increase efficiencies in our buildings; improve green electricity with renewable energy systems; engage suppliers and customers in their own environmental practices; and develop an eco-design approach with all our products.

As a lottery supplier, we print large volumes of instant scratch tickets at our printing facilities in Florida and in Italy. To reduce the environmental impact of our company’s ticket demands, our tickets are printed using paper derived from responsibly managed forests, and in Italy, the paper used is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Our ESG performance, including many of these accomplishments, is outlined in our 2022 Sustainability Report. While we are proud of our successes, we know there is still more to do, and IGT is committed to continuing our efforts to advance global sustainability within our industry and beyond.
