Governments worldwide have punted in the face of overwhelming evidence of environmental decay, and now we are in trouble. More responsive these days, ironically, are companies, which face pressure from consumers, partners, and especially hard-to-retain employees. Not to mention that they are often where pollution and greenhouse gasses come from.

Environmentalists are often hesitant to work with these partners, even though businesses are increasingly tractable. But the Environmental Defense Fund led the way in recognizing the opportunity decades ago, and has refined its toolkit and approach.
