MacKenzie Scott turned the world of philanthropy inside out in 2021. With little advance warning and next to no staff, she gave away $2.74 billion to 286 nonprofits in June, on top of the $6 billion she had donated the year before. Most important, her grants were given without any requirements about how the money was to be spent. As Scott explained in a blog post on Medium: “We are governed by a humbling belief that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands, and that the solutions are best designed and implemented by others.”
