Worth Media with Robert Silvers - Robert Silvers is the Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy, and Plans at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), at Milken Global Conference 2024 with Josh Kampel of Worth Media Group.
Worth asked Silvers about potential dangers of AI and how the U.S. government is addressing them. He explained that, unlike the regulatory approach in the European Union AI Act, the U.S. is focussing on voluntary agreements, Although he concedes that in the future, “We will probably end up in a place in this country where some elements of artificial intelligence will be regulated. That’s probably inevitable.”
The concern, he says, is to not discourage innovation. To that end, the Department of Homeland Security has just announced an AI Safety And Security Board, consisting of government members and chaired by the Department's secretary. It also includes major private sectors such as Sam Altman of OpenAI, Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Jensen Huan of Nvidia. Civil society leaders are present to represent civil right concerns; and the board includes leaders of critical infrastructure companies, including Delta Airlines and Occidental Petroleum.
Silvers goes on to discuss how the Department is working with tech companies to implement “security by design” to take the burden off small players such as schools and local water detritus, small business, and consumers. “That is the long game on how we’re going to have better cybersecurity,” he says.
