Lightspeed focuses on founders with the most-disruptive ideas at both the formative stage and the growth stage, says Mhatre. The conversation focuses on the AI revolution set in motion by the release of ChatGPT in 2022. "GPT was the coming out so that the world at large could understand that computers had crossed that threshold," of gaining the ability to think, he said. It was analogous to the arrival or AOL introducing people to the internet for the first time.

In response to Kampel's question about costs of AI, Mhatre explains that AI is very hard to scale. A lot of money has been thrown at the technology recently, and that may scale down as the industry matures and the leading players emerge.

"These traditional tech adoption hype cycles that we go through—we’re really in a peak moment where a lot of capital’s being thrown at the problem [of] training models," he said. We will go into some—I don’t know if it will be a trough of disillusionment—but some period where we taper down, where the realization of—hey, given the costs, should you have central players really providing more of the training? Should that be distributed? How should companies go from the foundation models to the enabling infrastructure to ultimately the applications? How should that happen in a way where value’s going to get created for the companies building [this tech]?”
