Techonomy History

The Techonomy Retreat is an annual invitation-only thought leadership conference hosted by Worth Media Group. It brings together business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, academics, and innovators to explore the transformative impact of technology on various sectors. The retreat has evolved over the years, addressing the most pressing issues of our time.

Origins and Early Years

The Techonomy Retreat was launched in 2010 as a platform for thought leaders to discuss the intersection of technology and economy. The inaugural event featured speakers like Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, and Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, and it served as a platform to discuss the growing mismatch between technology-empowered individuals and traditional institutions. It quickly gained recognition for fostering thought-provoking discussions on the impact of technology on various sectors.

Evolving Themes and Locations

The first conference, in 2010, was organized and hosted at Lake Tahoe in Truckee, California. And centered in the company’s core mission, highlighting how businesses in almost every industry are faced with the choice of adapting to take advantage of technology or being rendered extinct as the pace of change quickens.

From 2011 to 2013, the flagship retreat took place in Tucson, Arizona, with themes:

  • 2011: Revolutions in Progress
  • 2012: Insurgency and Opportunity: Companies, Countries, and Communities
  • 2013: The Business of Revolution

From 2014 to 2019, the event took place in Half Moon Bay, California, with themes:

  • 2014: Exploring how technology transforms business and society
  • 2015: “Re-Humanizing Society” and addressing technology’s societal impact
  • 2016: “Man, Machines, and the Network: Toward A Sentient Ecosystem”
  • 2017: “The Convergence of Man and Machine”
  • 2018: “Harnessing Tech for Responsible Growth”
  • 2019: “Reset and Restore: Governing Tech, Retrieving Ethics, and Acting on Climate”

The retreats were canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
