Sir Tim Berners-Lee, a graduate of Oxford University,ย invented the Web while at CERN in 1989. He wrote the first web client andย server in 1990. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Webย technology spread.ย In 2001 he became aย Fellow of the Royal Society. In 2004 heย was knighted by H.M. Queen Elizabethย and in 2007 he was awarded the Order of Merit.ย He is the Founder and Director of the World Wideย Consortium (W3C) andย the World Wide Web Foundation.ย He is aย Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Computerย Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and a Professor in the Computerย Science Department at Oxford University. His research group atย CSAIL works onย the Solid Project to give people control of their own data and to re-decentralizeย the Web.
In April 2017, Sir Tim was awarded the ACM A.M. Turing Prizeย for inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and theย fundamentalย protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale. The Turing Prize, calledย the “Nobel Prize of Computing” isย considered one of the mostย prestigious awards in Computer Science.
Sir Tim is a long time defender of Net Neutrality and theย openness of the Web.
