Rich Benjamin

Author & Social Analyst

Rich Benjamin is an observer, an investigator, a cultural anthropologist. He is author of Searching for Whitopia: An Improbable Journey to the Heart of White America, selected as an Editor’s Choice by Booklist and The American Library Association. Now in its second printing, this groundbreaking study is one of few to have illuminated in advance the social-political forces propelling the political rise of Donald Trump.  The book’s findings are also the subject of a TED Talk, which has garnered more than 2 million views and been translated into 25 languages.

Benjamin’s unique perspective on politics and culture appears regularly in The New York Times, The New Yorker.com, The Guardian, The New York Times Sunday Book Review, NPR, MSNBC, CNN, and PBS.  His work has been covered internationally in France, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, and Germany.

Benjamin earned a doctorate from Stanford University in Modern Thought and Literature, with a minor in Science and Technology Studies.

He serves on the Board of the Authors Guild, the largest, oldest union of writers in the US that fights for authors’ rights, their commercial interests, and free speech.
