David J. Johnson currently serves as the special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, San Francisco Division. Prior to this assignment, he was the special agent in charge of the FBI Salt Lake Division.
Mr. Johnson’s career at the FBI began in the San Francisco Division, San Jose Resident Agency in 1991 where he initially served on a violent crime squad. He was subsequently assigned to the cyber squad for three years and reassigned to investigate Mexican drug trafficking matters. In 1999, he was promoted to the position of supervisory special agent of the Asian organized crime squad in the San Jose Resident Agency, where he led two successful multi-agency task forces.
In 2003, he was promoted to unit chief of the Crimes Against Children Unit where he developed the Innocence Lost Initiative, established Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Teams, the Registered Sex Offenders Locating Tool (RESOLT) and interfaced with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
In 2005, Mr. Johnson returned to the San Francisco Division as the assistant special agent in charge of Criminal Programs, the Victim Witness Program and served as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commander.
Mr. Johnson was promoted to section chief of the Violent Crime Section in FBI Headquarters’ Criminal Investigative Division in 2009. In this role, he was responsible for the management of the FBI’s violent crime program, which includes numerous federal violations such as bank robberies, kidnappings, extortions, crimes against children, Indian country matters, fugitives, major theft, transportation crimes and special jurisdiction matters.
Mr. Johnson is responsible for all investigative, operational and administrative programs in the San Francisco Division. He oversees an enhanced SWAT, evidence recovery, hazardous materials response and crisis negotiation teams as well as aviation resources and the Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory. The San Francisco Division serves over 7.8 million people in 15 counties.
Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania State Bar in 1990 and practiced law prior to entering on duty as a special agent.
