Annis Stubbs

Executive Director, Teach For America - Detroit

Annis N. Stubbs is a native Detroiter and a graduate of Detroit Public Schools. After joining the corps in 2003, she taught seventh and eighth grade language arts and social studies in the South Bronx. She then went on to work for The New Teacher Project and serve as the training and support coordinator for the New York City Teaching Fellows. Annis then returned to Michigan to enroll in a doctoral program in curriculum, teaching, and educational policy at Michigan State University. In addition to conducting research on the achievement gap, she taught undergraduate courses in the US News & World Report’s No. 1 ranked secondary teacher education program at MSU and supervised student teachers in the field. Her peers also elected her as the chair of the American Educational Research Association’s graduate student governance. In 2010, she was named executive director of the charter Detroit region. Annis’ investment in Detroit has led her to become involved in numerous initiatives in the city, including the Future Teachers for Social Justice program, serving high school students from over 20 Detroit Public Schools. She also sits on the boards of the Public School Academies of Detroit and the Michigan Association of Public School Academies.
