Origins and Early Years
The Techonomy Retreat was launched in 2010 as a platform for thought leaders to discuss the intersection of technology and economy. The inaugural event featured speakers like Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, and Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, and it served as a platform to discuss the growing mismatch between technology-empowered individuals and traditional institutions. It quickly gained recognition for fostering thought-provoking discussions on the impact of technology on various sectors.Â
Evolving Themes and Locations
The first conference, in 2010, was organized and hosted at Lake Tahoe in Truckee, California. And centered in the company’s core mission, highlighting how businesses in almost every industry are faced with the choice of adapting to take advantage of technology or being rendered extinct as the pace of change quickens.
From 2011 to 2013, the flagship retreat took place in Tucson, Arizona, with themes:Â

The retreats were canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, the Techonomy Retreat returned to Sonoma, California, with the theme “Innovation Must Save the World.” It highlighted how innovation can address pressing global challenges like economic instability, political conflicts, climate change, and the ongoing pandemic.
